Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)[ Matokeo ya darasa la saba 2022/2023]

The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is a test that students take to evaluate whether or not they are prepared to go on to secondary school. This test will be administered to the group of standard seven kids who are currently enrolled in the school on the same day. The results of this test are one of the factors that might be considered when deciding whether or not a kid should continue their education into the secondary level or if they should be dropped temporarily and given another chance to take the PSLE.

In most cases, the results of the PSLE are not made public until one month has passed from the day of the exam. Nevertheless, the findings are often made public at an earlier time.

Learners’ understanding of the fundamental skills and abilities in reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as the extent to which they can apply such skills to the solution of relevant problems in life, is one of the objectives of the Primary and Secondary Leaving Examination (PSLE). Another objective is to identify learners who have the capacity to continue their education at secondary schools or other training institutions.

About NECTA

The Ministry of Education’s Curriculum and Examinations Section oversaw all exams after Tanzania Mainland withdrew from the East African Examinations Council in 1971 and before NECTA was officially created by law in 1973. Once NECTA was established, it legally took over responsibility for the Examinations. Up until the newly founded, independent Institute of Curriculum Development (ICD), which was renamed the Tanzania Institute of Education in 1993, took control of the Curriculum, it remained under the direction of the Ministry of Education and the University College, Dar es Salaam (TIE).

The first NECTA employees were hired between 1972 and 1976. Among them was Mr. P. P. Gandye, who was hired in 1972 and then promoted as Executive Secretary in 1994. The hiring of more staff members continues, particularly when NECTA’s headquarters were transferred from the Ministry of Education to the current location in Kijitonyama, close to Mwenge. NECTA now employs more than 250 people.

The Development of NECTA
The Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973 created the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA), a government institution. In Tanzania, NECTA is in charge of conducting all national examinations.

In April 1971, Tanzania Mainland made the choice to leave the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in order to administer her own exams. This decision was followed by the decision to form NECTA. In 1970, Zanzibar left the EAEC. Before the withdrawal, from 1968 to 1971, Tanzanian students took the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate’s alone administered overseas secondary school examinations, which were later jointly administered by the East African Syndicate. The School Certificate and Higher School Certificate Examinations were the tests that the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate administered back then. In 1947, African students took the School Certificate Examination for the first time, and in 1960, they took the Higher School Certificate examination.
