Courses at UNISA
There are a variety of different types of course offerings at UNISA, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratories, workshops, and field trips. Some courses are delivered as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which allow students to engage with content from the comfort of their own home and schedule.
What Type Of Course?
Lecture – A lecture is a course taught by a single instructor in front of an audience. Lectures can be scheduled for daytime or evening hours and are typically held in a centrally-located classroom on campus.
Seminar – A seminar is a group meeting between students and an instructor on a specific topic of interest. Seminars are scheduled for one hour and can be held in a centrally-located classroom or the instructor’s office.
Tutorial – A tutorial is a one-to-one meeting between a student and an instructor covering a specific topic of interest. Tutorials are scheduled for one hour and can be held in a centrally-located classroom or the instructor’s office.
Laboratory – A laboratory is a course taught by an instructor through hands-on experiments or projects. Laboratories can be scheduled for daytime or evening hours and are typically held in a centrally-located laboratory on campus.
Workshop – A workshop is a course taught by an instructor through hands-on projects or group exercises. Workshops can be scheduled for daytime or evening hours and are typically held in a centrally-located workshop on campus.
Field Trip – A field trip is a brief excursion away from campus for educational purposes. Field trips are typically scheduled for daytime hours and are held on and off campus.
UNISA Undergraduate courses
Undergraduate courses offered by UNISA are a wide range of different subjects aimed at developing the knowledge and skills of undergraduate students. These include a variety of different disciplines such as computer science, applied mathematics, business and marketing, and law.

UNISA Honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas are awarded by the University of South Africa (UNISA). They are designed for students who have completed their bachelor’s degree, but want to take on more challenging subjects.

UNISA Master’s & doctoral degrees
Master’s and doctoral degrees (or postgraduate qualifications) are the highest academic level of academic achievement in South Africa. Master’s degrees typically take three years to complete full-time, while doctorates may take up to five years or more. Doctorates can lead to higher-paying jobs in fields such as medicine, law and business, and provide a stepping stone towards a career in academia or research.
To earn a master’s degree, students typically complete two-year courses that cover a wide range of subjects. They can also undertake a research project during their studies, which may be supervised by an academic mentor. To earn a doctorate, students typically undertake three-year courses that focus on one particular field of study. They must also produce a thesis or dissertation, which is a research paper that may be submitted for publication.
